May 21, 2025 – The Graduate Students’ Association of the University of Alberta (GSA UofA) congratulates Myles McDougall on his appointment as Alberta’s new Minister of Advanced Education. Representing over 8,000 graduate students at one of Canada’s leading research-intensive institutions, the GSA is eager to work with Minister McDougall to ensure Alberta’s post-secondary landscape continues to support graduate-level education, research, and innovation.
We extend our appreciation to Minister Rajan Sawhney for her service and collaboration during her time in office. The GSA valued the opportunities to engage in dialogue with the ministry on critical issues facing graduate students and acknowledges her contributions toward post-secondary access and quality.
With Minister McDougall’s extensive background in economics, education, and innovation—and as a former student leader himself—we are hopeful this transition brings renewed attention to the graduate student experience in Alberta.
As we look ahead, the GSA UofA is committed to advocating for the priorities that matter most to our members, including:
- Supporting stable and predictable graduate funding models to retain top talent and strengthen Alberta’s research capacity.
- Ensuring graduate education remains accessible and competitive, particularly in high-demand and innovation-focused sectors.
- Enhancing mental health and career development supports improving retention and post-graduation outcomes.
- Promoting a welcoming environment for international graduate students and their families, who contribute significantly to Alberta’s academic and economic landscape.
We thank Minister Sawhney for her leadership. The GSA UofA looks forward to working with Minister McDougall and continuing to advocate for a stronger, more equitable post-secondary system for all graduate students in Alberta.
