Grants
The GSA offers four types of funding to support graduate students during their degree programs. These funds are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis, and as per GSA Policy, "If all available funds have been expended in the specific period, no additional applications will be accepted during that period."
Important: You must be logged in with your UAlberta email address to access the online application form for all grant categories.
GSA Child Care Grants
Step 1: Initial Application Form
- Academic and employment information for yourself and your spouse/partner (if applicable);
- Your gross yearly household income for the previous 12 months (for example, if you are applying in September 2021, please provide 12 months of income from September 2020 to August 2021); and,
- The names and ages of all you children.

Step 2: Additional Information
- A current fee assessment from Beartracks (or equivalent) for yourself, and for a spouse/partner who is a student;
- Photocopies of birth certificates for all children listed in the application; and,
- Proof of income for EACH parent such as:
- Your most recent pay cheque statement from Beartracks
- Your most recent pay cheque statement from other employment outside of the U of A
- Your spouse/partner's most recent pay cheque statement
- Any statement of EI benefits you might be receiving
- If you do not have pay cheque information, we will also accept a letter from your employer stating your yearly salary, a letter from your department indicating the value of your annual stipend and/or scholarship(s), or your most recent T4/T4A (tax statement)
GSA Academic Travel Grants
The GSA Academic Travel Grant helps offset the cost of participation in academic activities such as conferences and research trips that are directly related to graduate students' current academic programs.
Funding is also available for costs associated with online events.
Application Process
- Contact information for yourself and your supervisor/chair/delegate;
- Information on the academic event you will be attending;
- Expenses related to the academic event (registration; airfare; accommodations; etc. - estimates are okay); and,
- Any sources of funding you already have.
Reminder: ATG applications can only be submitted no more than six (6) weeks before the academic event (as determined from the date the application is received). Applications received after the academic event has occurred will not be eligible. For example, if the academic event starts on March 25, count backward six (6) weeks - February 11 is the first day of eligibility.
Once you have submitted an application, your supervisor/chair/delegate will be contacted to confirm that the event is directly related to your current academic program.
GSA Graduate Student Group Grants
Application Process
- Information on your Graduate Student Group
- Contact information for yourself, an alternate contact from your group, and a supervisor/chair/delegate/University Administrator of the non-departmental unit the group is affiliated
- Information on the academic event you are hosting or on the uses of start-up funds applied for
- Proposed budget for your academic event (honorarium; travel; accommodations; venue; refreshments; etc. - estimates are okay)
- Any sources of funding you already have.
Reminder: SA GSGG applications for academic events must be submitted before the event (as determined from the date the application is received). Applications received after the academic event has occurred will not be eligible.
Once you have submitted an application, the supervisor/chair/delegate/University Administrator of the non-departmental unit the group is affiliated with will be contacted to confirm that the event is of an academic nature.
