The Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) of the University of Alberta acknowledges the deeply concerning and rapidly evolving situation in Iran. We recognize that the events unfolding are causing significant distress, fear, and uncertainty for many members of our graduate student community, particularly those with family, loved ones, or personal ties to the region. We also understand that ongoing violence, instability, and communication disruptions can take a profound emotional toll, even from afar.
During this difficult time, we wish to express our empathy and solidarity with all graduate students who are affected. You are not alone, and your well-being matters.
In addition to existing mental health and wellness services, the following supports are currently available to Iranian graduate students:
- Financial and Emergency Support (GSA)
Targeted GSA emergency bursaries are available for graduate students directly affected by the situation in Iran, including assistance with unexpected travel or relocation costs, as well as support for students who are struggling to cover essential living expenses and basic needs due to safety, mobility, or financial constraints. - Academic Flexibility and In-Person Support (GPS)
Graduate students experiencing significant stress or disruption related to the situation in Iran may contact a GPS Associate Dean at ascdean@ualberta.ca or visit the GPS office in person on the second floor of Triffo Hall. Associate Deans can provide guidance on communicating with supervisors and discuss academic options, including leave of absence, where appropriate.
- Application Deadline Flexibility (GPS)
Extensions to deadlines for applications for admission and the associated required documents may be available for Iranian applicants affected by internet disruptions or circumstances beyond their control. Once internet access is restored, applicants should reach out to their prospective program to request extensions.
- Tuition Deadline Considerations (GPS)
Flexibility in tuition payment deadlines may be available to Iranian graduate students affected by delays in banking, internet access, or mobility restrictions. Students needing such flexibility may reach out to graddean@ualberta.ca with more information about their specific needs and requests. - Supporting Students Unable to Leave Iran (GPS)
A confidential mechanism is in place to collect updated information regarding Iranian students currently unable to leave Iran, for advocacy, institutional awareness, and coordination of further support actions. - Faculty and Supervisor Awareness (GPS)
Faculty and supervisors are encouraged to provide understanding, flexibility, and compassionate academic support to Iranian graduate students who may be experiencing academic or personal hardship.
