Strategic Workplan

Each spring the GSA student executives work with the GSA Board to produce a Strategic Work Plan (SWP). The SWP is the document that steers and prioritizes the work and initiatives of the GSA. The GSA sees this as a living document, shifting directions as needed as the provincial, federal, and University landscapes change. It is developed annually with reference to the Strategic Work Plans of previous GSA Boards, and provides a planning document for this and future years. The SWP reflects the GSA's vision and mission to advocate for all graduate students to the University of Alberta and the Alberta Government for a safe, supportive, respectful, accessible, and inclusive community that fosters the multi-faceted roles played by graduate students.

SWP 2025-2026

The GSA’s Strategic Work Plan (SWP) outlines the top priorities that each elected Directly-Elected Officer (DEO) will work on during their term. It ensures the GSA stays focused, accountable, and aligned with graduate student needs.

This year’s plan was shaped by the GSA Priorities Survey (April–June 2025), followed by two consultation sessions in May and June. DEOs also reviewed last year’s SWP to identify progress, gaps, and carry-forward items.

New this year, each DEO developed their own portfolio-specific goals instead of a shared theme-based structure. This change allows for clearer accountability and enables DEOs to focus on projects that align with their roles and timelines.

The VP Indigenous Relations, elected in July 2025, developed her goals through summer consultations with First Peoples’ House, IGSA, and other Indigenous student groups.

The SWP doesn’t cover everything the GSA does—but it highlights the focused initiatives guiding our work this year.
