Daniel Carleton
Daniel Carleton is a PhD student in Physics at the University of Alberta specializing in plasma physics and laser plasma interactions. His research focuses on developing advanced ray tracing and theoretical models for diagnosing and understanding parametric instabilities in high energy-density plasmas. Beyond his research, He is committed to supporting and improving the graduate student experience. As an active member of the Graduate Physics Student Association (GPSA), he has represented students on departmental and faculty committees, participated in faculty hiring processes, and played a key role in organizing the annual GPSA symposium to strengthen connections between students, alumni, industry partners, and researchers. His work in student leadership focuses on advocating for transparent communication, fostering a supportive academic community, and ensuring that graduate students’ voices are heard in decision-making spaces. He is passionate about mentorship, community building, and helping students navigate the challenges and successes of graduate studies. He aims to create an environment where all graduate students feel connected, supported, and empowered to thrive both academically and personally

Alan Han
I am a second-year Master of Nursing Student in the leadership stream, with research focused on racialized nurses’ experiences with moral distress within the ICU. Having completed both of my bachelor’s degrees here, the University of Alberta has always felt like my home away from home where I’ve found new ideas, community, and passion to support others.
Over the years, I have been actively involved across the campus community supporting University programs (ie. Week of Welcome), in student group volunteerism and leadership (ie. TeamUP Science, Canadian Blood Services NextGen Youth Committee, Heart of the Music), and student governance (ie. Interdisciplinary Science Students’ Society, Nursing Undergraduate Association, Nursing Graduate Students’ Association). Alongside University programs, I also engage with the Edmonton Arts scene as a teacher, singer, and accompanist, and currently volunteer within the United Nurses of Alberta union to advocate for greater Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) representation.
As a volunteer, healthcare professional, advocate, and fellow student, I strongly believe in relationality and communication. Ideas are meant to be discussed, actions should be intentional, and people should feel heard. I hope to uphold these beliefs as a deputy speaker.
